Study in Australia
Work after study in Australia (Temporary Graduate visa 485)
For most Malaysians, the honest route into skilled migration is not a points test from KL. It is a completed Australian qualification, then a Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), then skilled work. This page is that bridge.
What the 485 is for
The Temporary Graduate visa lets eligible graduates stay and work after they finish a qualifying CRICOS course. Streams and duration change with policy. We assess against current Home Affairs rules at the time you are finishing, not against a blog from three years ago.
- You generally need to have held a student visa and completed an eligible qualification in Australia.
- English, health, character and application timing (including the window after results) are strict.
- A 485 is temporary. It is not PR. It is the period in which many graduates gain the skilled work that later visas require.
Plan the 485 when you pick the course, not after graduation
Course level, study location (metro vs regional), and whether the qualification is on the right AQF level all affect later options. Choosing a cheap one-year course that does not meet 485 criteria is a common, expensive mistake. We flag this in the first education consult.
After 485: skilled visas live on the Australian site
Employer sponsorship, points-tested skilled visas, DAMA and MINT are real pathways for some graduates, and fantasy for others. Deep guides stay on haysmigration.com.au. This Malaysia site’s job is to get the study choice right so those pages become relevant later.
Questions families actually ask
FAQ
Can I apply for 485 from Malaysia?+
Most 485 applications are lodged by people who studied in Australia on a student visa. If you have not studied in Australia, this is not your first visa. Start with study.
Does every degree get post-study work?+
No. Eligibility depends on the qualification, CRICOS course, and current streams. We check this before you enrol, not after you graduate.
Is 485 a path to PR?+
It can be a stepping stone if you then meet skilled, employer or regional criteria. It is not PR by itself.
